Drum Lessons in Westchester County, NY: A Complete Guide for Parents and Adults
Updated: Sep 22
If you are looking for drum lessons in Westchester County, this guide covers what actually matters: what good lessons include, what they cost, whether your child needs a drum set to start, and how to pick a teacher worth your time. I am Rudy Feinauer. I teach drums out of my studio in Ardsley and online, I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory, and I have been teaching for more than 35 years. I also still perform, including a weekly jam at The Bayou in Mount Vernon.
What good drum lessons actually include
Real lessons are more than keeping a beat. A good teacher builds four things at once: hand and foot technique, timing and feel, reading, and the ability to play actual songs. I tailor every lesson to the student, so a kid who wants to play rock and a teen prepping for a school audition are not working from the same page. Styles range from rock and funk to jazz, Latin, and New Orleans second line, and the technique you build carries across all of them.
In person in Ardsley, or online across Westchester and beyond
Ardsley sits in central Westchester, a short drive from Scarsdale, White Plains, Hartsdale, Edgemont, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Hastings-on-Hudson, and Yonkers. In person lessons happen at my studio, where a full kit is already set up, so a new student does not need one to begin. I also teach live over Zoom and FaceTime, which works well for busy families and for students outside the area entirely.
What drum lessons cost in Westchester
Private lessons around Westchester generally run from about $50 to $140 depending on length and the teacher. My lessons start at $50 for 30 minutes, with 45, 60, 90, and 120 minute options as a student grows. The first lesson is always free, with no commitment, so you can see if it is a fit before you pay anything. Not every studio offers that, so it is an easy, no risk way to compare teachers.
Does your child need a drum set to start?
No. A practice pad and a pair of sticks are all that is needed for the first several months, and a pad is quiet enough that nobody in the house gets a headache. Students use a full kit during lessons, and we can talk about buying a set later, once it is clear the interest is real.
NYSSMA and school music
Many Westchester students play in school band or take a NYSSMA solo. I am a former NYSSMA adjudicator, so I know what the scoring sheet rewards: steady tempo, clean dynamics, and confident sight reading. If your child has an evaluation coming up, I build a prep plan around the piece and the date.
How to choose a drum teacher
Ask three things. Are they trained, are they still playing, and will your child study with the same person each week? A teacher who still performs in public keeps caring about being good on the instrument, and that makes the teaching sharper. Studying with one consistent teacher, rather than a rotating roster, means the lessons build on each other.
